The NHS consultation "Better Healthcare Closer to Home" has now finished. Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Epsom & Ewell, Councillor Jonathan Lees says "The next big date is 25th January when we will find out which site has been chosen for the new critical care centre. This could be in Epsom or in Sutton. The Liberal Democrats in Epsom & Ewell, as LOCAL people who live in this community, are determined that nothing happens to take away our local hospital from Epsom."

RA leaders reject more open meetings

At December's meeting of the Borough Council, Cllr Jonathan Lees was heavily criticised by the leaders of the RA Party for "daring" to suggest that the public should be allowed to ask questions at the start of meetings. Cllr Lees said later, "We obviously touched a raw nerve tonight!"

The Folkestone based 1st Royal Gurkha Rifles have not been included in a series of mergers and battalion reductions announced by Minister for Defence Geoff Hoon in a statement to Parliament today. Despite fears that the Gurkhas were amongst those facing cuts, the announcement seems to safeguard the future of the batallion.

LIB DEM TORBAY COUNCIL IN TOP 5 FOR IMPROVEMENT

Liberal Democrat run Torbay Council has been rated as 'Fair' in a corporate governance report from the Audit Commission. This is up from the 'weak' rating from last year and the 'poor' rating (the bottom category) that the Council received when the Conservatives were in power in 2002. The rating improvement comes despite a difficult year culminating in the Council being capped.
