Save Our Stroke Service

Sherborne rural residents are at risk of losing vital acute stroke services in Yeovil as a part of NHS restructuring.

NHS Somerset have recently announced a consultation on stroke services in the county. One potential outcome is a new hyper acute stroke unit in Taunton, where 24/7 consultant-led care will be available. However, this could result in the current unit in Yeovil being closed.

Dorset has its own hyper acute unit, but it is in Bournemouth - 45 miles from Sherborne.

Cllr Robin Legg said: “It’s not just Yeovil that stands to lose this vital service. The needs of residents in the Sherborne area must be taken into account. The Lib Dems will lobby to ensure that we are not overlooked during these discussions.”

Edward Morello added: “People in Sherborne who needed emergency care would take over an hour to get to a specialist unit, even if an ambulance arrived in a timely fashion. The Lib Dems will keep standing up for Sherborne and West Dorset.

The consultation runs until 24th April 2023. You can contribute at somersetics.org.uk/stroke
