Liberal Democrat Dorset Councillors for Dorchester have been pressing Dorset Council to make Fairfield car park safer.

Fairfield car park is in the centre of Dorchester, and serves Brewery Square, the hub of Dorchester's nighttime economy. Currently, most of the car park does not have any street lighting, meaning people using it at night are forced to walk to and from their cars in the dark. Additionally, the surrounding pavements and pedestrian crossings require safety improvements.

Cllr Andy Canning, Dorchester West said: "Brewery Square is the heart of Dorchester's nighttime economy. People park in Fairfield car park to visit our bars and restaurants, but there is not adequate street lighting in the car park. The last thing anyone wants to see is someone getting hurt - Fairfield needs these improvements, and it needs them now.

"There is also a lack of safe pavements and one of the pedestrian crossings on Weymouth Avenue is clearly in the wrong place."

The good news is that Dorset Council has agreed to work with local residents, businesses, and Dorchester Town Council to make significant improvements to the area.

Cllr Canning concluded: "I'm very pleased to see Dorset Council commit to this consultation. Your local Lib Dem team and I will keep you fully up to date with progress on this, and we will seek to include residents in the decision-making process wherever possible."
