Fairtrade fortnight praised in parliament

Cumbria's own 'Fairtrade Fortnight', which is due to run from the 25th of February to the 9th of March this year has been praised by Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron, who has tabled a Commons Motion welcoming the project. Mr Farron, who is the Countryside spokesman for the Liberal Democrats has been campaigning for the Fairtrade brand, which has ensured a better deal for thousands of third world farmers, to be extended to British farmers as well.

Post office campaign - Bring your letters to Tim Farron this Saturday!

Local MP Tim Farron is urging local residents to make a final push in the campaign to save our post offices, by delivering supportive letters for their post office to him this Saturday, and also by signing the petition. Tim will have a stall at the 'birdcage' in Kendal town centre where he hopes to recruit many more local residents to his campaign to keep open the 42 post offices in his constituency that are at risk of closure.

Clegg uses Prime Minister's Questions to criticise Government's treatment of armed forces

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has said that the Prime Minister "cannot even be bothered" to provide decent medical care for injured armed forces' personnel. Mr Clegg used his interventions during Prime Minister's Questions to accuse Gordon Brown of failing to invest in housing, equipment and care for soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable also spoke at PMQs, raising the issue of projected figures of one million house repossessions in the UK this year.

Long term commitment on refuse collections is needed

Call for long term commitment to residents on waste

Lib Dem Group Leader Councillor David Kendall has called on Tory controlled Brentwood Borough Council to give a long term commitment to residents that they will NOT consider introducing fortnightly residual waste collections, tagging bins or charging by weight collected for at least the next five years.

Government advisors recommend 'food for the brain' campaign

A significant contributor to the increasing rate of crime, aggression, depression and poor school performance is poor nutrition. That's the conclusion of the Parliamentary Food and Health Forum, who issue a report today urging for government to fund a campaign to research, increase awareness, and encourage us to eat more fish and whole foods, high in essential fats, vitamins and minerals.
