Breaking News: Foot and Mouth Temporary Control Zone put in place on Romney Marsh

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have this morning announced a 3km radius Temporary Control Zone has been put on Romney Marsh, following a suspected case of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) on a farm in the Romney Marsh area. Kent Trading Standards Officers are working with DEFRA, and a vet has taken samples for formal analysis: results are not expected until later today at the earliest.

First Call for Kent County Council Candidates for May 2009

In May 2009, all Kent County Councillors will be up for re-election. Shepway Liberal Democrats are aiming to select prospective candidates for the six Shepway Kent county seats (Elham Valley, Folkestone North-East, Folkestone South, Folkestone West, Hythe and Romney Marsh) this Autumn.

Liberal Democrats revel that almost half of hospital kitchens are failing hygiene inspections

According to a nationwide survey by the Liberal Democrats, almost half of all hospitals kitchens and/or canteens in England could be failing to meet cleanliness and hygiene standards. Nearly a fifth of hospitals surveyed kept food at the wrong temperatures or in unsafe conditions, while 11 hospitals had problems with vermin. Offending hospitals reported problems including cockroaches and mouse droppings in kitchens, medical waste on food handling equipment and poor personal hygiene in staff.
