Recycling has got two dimensions: one is environmental, one is financial. Waste that goes to landfill produces a powerful greenhouse gas, methane, which is many times more powerful than CO2. In order to combat global warming we need to dramatically reduce landfill waste and recycle more. The second reason is financial. Central Government is really tightening the screws on council's that don't recycle, over the next few years financial penalties will run into tens of millions of pounds if we don't recycle to reach our government set targets. For many years this Council ran a half hearted and under funded scheme that resulted in RMBC always failing to reach targets.

Lib Dem Transport Spokesperson - Paul Rowen MP joined forces with Rochdale Lib Dem Representative on the GMPTA - Councillor Peter Davison to highlight the congestion on our early morning trains. The pair caught the early morning commuter train from Rochdale to Manchester and were both shocked at the conditions.

High Flying Councillor a step closer to full license!

Kingsway Councillor Mark Birkett is closer to achieving his personal ambition of a full Commercial Pilot's License after completing a 'Night Flying Course" Mark, who spends most of his time on his crusade to clean up Buersil, Newbold and Kingsway has been keeping his high flying ambitions to himself but is aiming to achieve his full commercial pilot's license later this year. The rating he received has moved this ambition on even further and he is delighted with the outcome now being able to fly a single-engine aircraft at night.

Autism-like disorder 'reversible'

The symptoms of a severe brain disorder similar to autism, which affects around 10,000 UK children, could be reversed, scientists believe. Scottish researchers made symptoms of Rett syndrome disappear in mice by activating a single gene, the magazine Science reports. The condition, which mainly affects girls, was previously thought to be irrevocable. It can leave children mute and with multiple disabilities.

Autism gene breakthrough hailed

Scientists have found new autism genes by scanning the largest collection of families with multiple cases of autism ever assembled. The monumental task of studying the 1,200 families took more than 120 scientists from more than 50 institutions across 19 countries. The work, described in Nature Genetics, implicates a region of chromosome 11 and a specific gene called neurexin 1. Experts say the findings should help with finding new autism treatments.

Many fail to recognise tinnitus

One in four people with tinnitus initially thought the noises they could hear were coming from their surroundings, research has found. Many people with the condition had mistakenly complained to their local council about noise pollution. Tinnitus, which affects 4.7 million in the UK, is the medical term for any noise heard in the ears or in the head.
