TORIES PROPOSE SLASHING POTHOLES MAINTENANCE

Proposed changes to Essex County Council's highways maintenance strategy, will mean that people in Essex will have to get used to bigger potholes being around for longer, as the ruling Conservative party fail to balance its funding of road maintenance. The proposals come just weeks after the Conservatives announced a £10m overspend on the highways budget.

Liberal Democrats criticise Government go-ahead for nuclear power

The Government will tomorrow end nearly four years of internal debate by announcing plans designed to entice the nuclear industry to invest in a new generation of 10 nuclear power stations in Britain. The new stations are intended to provide Britain with energy security by reducing dependence on imported gas and oil. They are likely to produce 20% or more of UK electricity needs and will replace today's generation of ageing reactors.

Post office campaign update - local residents take up the challenge

Local MP Tim Farron has received hundreds more letters in addition to the huge numbers who have already signed petitions against the Government's decision to put 43 local post offices under threat of closure. Tim's campaign against the closures has only been running for a matter of weeks and the response has been overwhelming.

MP takes Mountain Rescue funding fight to the Treasury

Local MP Tim Farron is pressing the Treasury over exempting Mountain Rescue vehicles from paying Vehicle Excise Duty. VED on 4x4 vehicles rises to £400 in April, which will saddle Mountain Rescue nationally with a bill of some £40,000 per annum.

"PCT must act to keep NHS dentistry at Stramongate" - Farron

After the successful campaign to keep the Ambleside NHS dental practice open last year, local MP Tim Farron is today calling on Cumbria Primary Care Trust to prevent the dentist practice in Stramongate from going private. The level of NHS dentistry available nationally has dropped sharply under the current Labour Government, and Mr Farron wants to see this trend reversed.
